Replacing an Old Flag with a New One: How to Tell It Is Time

Your country’s flag, no matter where you’re from, in a sense is sacred. It symbolizes kinship, home, honor and ideals. Here in the United States of America, many of us fly our country’s banner with pride. This isn’t just in diplomatic institutions. We’re talking everywhere. Malls, restaurants, bars, stadiums and even in our own homes!
What all of us flag lovers know, is that those stars and stripes deserve our utmost respect! It is also for this reason, that many of us have trouble deciding when it is time to let go of that old flag and replace it with a new one!

What Are We Supposed to Do?

 

The last thing you want to do is dispose of a flag which is still presentable. According to the U.S. Flag Code, a flag that is no longer fit to fly as a banner must be disposed of in the most respectable fashion possible.
This still begs the question, how do we know that the flag we want to fly is no longer fit to be displayed?

When that Flag Can’t Fly

For starters, to make life simple, we’ve elaborated on some of the situations where it might be a good idea to respectably retire that flag and invest in a new one.

Faded Colors

As with any kind of colored fabric, over time and due to exposure, colors do and will lose their brightness. Of course your flag won’t glow like it did when you bought it three years in even with good upkeep. This is not when you dispose it off though.
If however the colors have become visibly dull and almost a different shade, it is time to retire that flag.

Staining

Now this one is pretty bad. Ideally, you should treat your flag with so much care that nothing ever gets on it. If you do somehow manage to stain your flag, and the stain is particularly stubborn and is defacing your flag, you know the flag is no longer fit to fly.

Damaged Fabric

Last but not least, if the fabric of the flag has sustained reasonable damage it might be best to replace it with a new one. When we say damaged fabric, this would include everything from holes and tears to frays around the edges through sheer age.
In any case, if your star spangled banner is in tattered, say your goodbyes and lower it for the last time with the surety that you will get a new one!
